Squirrels masturbate to avoid sexually transmitted infections

A fascinating (and fairly graphic) account from Ed Yong’s blog describing the paper ‘The Adaptive Function of Masturbation in a Promiscuous African Ground Squirrel’. The author Jane Waterman studies the evolution of social behavior and mating systems in animals, and she has spent around 2000 hours watching and collecting data on these squirrels.
